Lab Compendium

The lab compendium defines the set of supported tests for each laboratory in the Lab Network. It ensures that submitted orders match the expected codes, specimen requirements, and ordering constraints of the receiving lab. Because each laboratory maintains its own compendium, orders that include tests from multiple vendors trigger Health Gorilla’s pre-submission split logic to ensure proper routing.

Health Gorilla maintains a validated compendium for each lab partner, including mappings to standardized code systems and internal routing identifiers. The compendium is essential for ensuring successful order transmission and result reconciliation.

Compendium Structure

Each lab compendium is a structured catalog of test definitions, including:

  • Test identifier: The lab’s internal code used for routing and fulfillment
  • Test name: Human-readable display name for the test
  • Mapped codes: Associated LOINC, SNOMED CT, or other standardized values
  • Specimen requirements: Required specimen types, handling instructions, and collection conditions
  • Orderability: Flags indicating whether the test is available electronically and under what conditions
  • Turnaround time: Expected time between order submission and result availability

Tests are grouped into panels, specialties, or categories depending on the lab’s taxonomy. Each compendium entry is associated with a specific lab and is only valid for that routing destination.

Validation and Alignment

Before a requisition can be routed to a lab, the requested tests must be validated against the configured compendium. This prevents invalid orders, ensures completeness, and supports accurate result matching.

Validation checks include:

  • Confirming that the test code exists and is active in the selected lab’s compendium
  • Ensuring that all required specimen and clinical fields are present in the requisition
  • Mapping the requested test to the correct internal code for lab routing
  • Rejecting requests for tests that are restricted, deprecated, or unsupported by the lab

The solution performs this validation automatically at the time of order submission. If validation fails, an error is returned with a descriptive message.

Compendium Updates

Lab compendiums are updated based on the partner lab’s publication schedule and routing requirements. Health Gorilla coordinates updates to ensure compatibility with the ordering workflow.

Update process includes:

  • Receiving updated test definitions from the lab
  • Validating changes for compatibility and code mapping accuracy
  • Deploying the revised compendium to the appropriate environment
  • Notifying clients if test availability, codes, or routing behavior has changed

Compendiums may differ between environments. Always verify that test codes used in sandbox match the intended configuration in production.

Summary

The lab compendium defines the accepted test codes and clinical requirements for each lab partner. Orders are validated against the selected compendium to ensure routing accuracy, prevent rejection, and support downstream result matching. Health Gorilla maintains and updates these compendiums in coordination with partner labs and your ordering configuration.
