Lab Network

The Lab Network enables electronic ordering and result retrieval across national and regional laboratories. Orders are routed to connected laboratories based on configured compendia and routing rules, and inbound results are normalized to FHIR for consistent downstream consumption.

Lab Network supports multiple access models depending on implementation needs:

  • API-based integration for programmatic order submission and structured result retrieval
  • Health Gorilla UI for manual order placement and operational review
  • iFrame-based access for embedded order placement only

Results consumption is primarily API-driven. The UI provides limited, order-centric visibility into received result artifacts and status and is not intended as a full clinical results viewer.

Access Models

Explains the available access models for interacting with the Lab Network—API, Health Gorilla UI, and iFrame—and how each supports different ordering and results workflows.

Health Gorilla UI

Supports manual order placement and operational review of order status and received result artifacts without building API-based ordering workflows.

Lab Network iFrame

Supports embedded order placement within your application using Health Gorilla’s ordering interface, while relying on APIs or the UI for results handling.

Ordering and Results

Describes the end-to-end lifecycle for electronic order submission, routing, fulfillment, and result retrieval using Lab Network APIs, including structured and unstructured results.

Integration Setup

Outlines the technical, operational, and contractual prerequisites for enabling API-based ordering and result retrieval through the Lab Network.

Requisition API

Defines the request/response models for placing orders, tracking status, and managing order-related metadata.

Result Normalization

Details how inbound results are parsed, mapped to FHIR Observations, and retained alongside original artifacts for provenance.

Lab Compendium

Explains compendium configuration, validation, and maintenance practices that ensure accurate test selection and routing.

Lab Endpoints

Lists all FHIR R4 endpoints used for lab ordering and results, showing how each resource contributes to the overall workflow.

Lab Example Workflow

Demonstrates a complete lab ordering and result retrieval sequence with example FHIR requests, responses, and best-practice guidance.

Lab Partners

Describes how Health Gorilla connects with national, regional, and specialty laboratories, outlines available capabilities, and explains onboarding and configuration requirements.

Connected Laboratories

Lists laboratories with active, production-grade integrations on the Lab Network and identifies whether each connection supports bi-directional exchange or results-only delivery.

Troubleshooting

Provides resolutions for common issues in order submission, laboratory responses, and result delivery.
