CommonWell

Health Gorilla connects to CommonWell to enable secure, bidirectional exchange of patient records with ambulatory practices, specialty providers, and participating health systems across the United States. By integrating through Health Gorilla, you gain access to CommonWell participants without managing separate trust agreements or endpoint credentials.

Data Coverage

CommonWell participants share a broad range of ambulatory and specialty-care information, including visit notes, care plans, laboratory results, medications, immunizations, allergies, and vital signs. Health Gorilla normalizes all retrieved content into FHIR resources with provenance metadata for consistent, reusable structure.

CommonWell expands access beyond hospital networks to include outpatient and specialty settings, making it a key source of longitudinal patient data across the continuum of care.

Delegation of Authority

Health Gorilla operates as a certified CommonWell Connector, maintaining network credentials, endpoint discovery, and compliance on your behalf. Your organization delegates these responsibilities to Health Gorilla, eliminating the need for direct onboarding into the CommonWell framework.

Participation

When your organization integrates with Health Gorilla, participation in CommonWell exchange is automatically enabled where permitted purposes apply. Health Gorilla enforces framework policies at runtime to ensure compliance and appropriate data exchange. No separate CommonWell agreements are required.

Reciprocity

Like other national frameworks, CommonWell requires reciprocal participation. Access to external records depends on your organization’s willingness to contribute clinical data back to the network through Health Gorilla’s FHIR API.

Technical Notes

Health Gorilla supports multiple interoperability standards when working with CommonWell, including:

  • Protocols: IHE XCPD/XCA, HL7 C-CDA, and FHIR
  • Identity matching: Health Gorilla’s Master Patient Index (MPI) combined with CommonWell Record Locator Service (RLS) and referential data
  • Delivery options: Results are typically returned through synchronous API responses or delivered as push notifications using FHIR Subscriptions
